I had the pleasure of getting a place on a RHA Masterclass recently. I am a big fan of Sky Portrait Artist of the Year and especially of Gareth Reid (winner in 2017) and his portrait of Graham Norton that is now hanging in the National Gallery of Ireland. I had always loved his way of building up a portrait with his light lines intersecting each other eventually resulting in an almost sculptural effect. I was looking forward to learning some of his techniques.
We had two days of intensive drawing in charcoal from life. It was wonderful to retreat from the weekend spending most of it in the RHA school studio. I learned by doing and getting constructive feedback from Gareth.
